The northern metro sports community experienced the entire spectrum of emotions in 2005, from pride at serving as home to the country's top two basketball players in Greg Oden of Lawrence North High School and North Central's Amber Harris, to grief over the sudden deaths of Cathedral football player Jeramy Schmitt and Heritage Christian tennis and girls' basketball coach Mark Richards.

Here, then, is a look at the area's top sports stories:

1. Greg Oden. The Wildcats' senior center is the top boys basketball player in the country. The National Basketball Association changed its draft rules, so he'll be required to attend college for at least one season. His signing with Ohio State University was broadcast on television in Columbus , Ohio . Eyes will remain on the 7-footer as Greg Oden attempts to lead Lawrence North to a third straight Class 4A state championship.
