Conley Joins Greg Oden On Indiana All-Stars

Lawrence North standout Mike Conley will join former teammate and Mr. Basketball Greg Oden on the 2006 Indiana All-Stars.

The Indianapolis Star, which sponsors the award, announced the team in Sunday's edition.

Conley, one of the top-ranked point guards in the nation, finished a distant second to his friend Greg Oden in the voting for Mr. Basketball.

All-Star coach Chris Benedict of Columbia City said there is a special buzz about this year's team because of the pair from Lawrence North, the three-time Class 4-A state champion.

"Those two have done such a tremendous job for Lawrence North," Benedict said. "They're team guys who adapted their game to do well in every situation. I'm sure they will be good leaders for this team."

Andrew Warren of Indianapolis Brebeuf, who averaged 19.4 points per game this past season, agreed.

"This is a great opportunity," Warren said. "This team definitely will go down in history."

The Indiana All-Stars will play the Kentucky All-Stars June 17 in Bowling Green, Ky., and June 24 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Vaughn Duggins of Pendleton Heights is the highest-scoring player on the All-Stars, averaging 26.7 points. Eight players averaged 19 points or more as seniors.

Curtis White of Indianapolis Pike wasn't one of them. "I didn't think I had the stats, but I'm glad they realized I was a team player for the state's No. 2 team," said White, who averaged 13 points.

"But I just wanted to win, and I didn't care about stats. I was about playing team ball, and it will be fun playing the same way with the best in the state."

The unit also includes Jeffersonville's Antonio Ballard, Andrean's Luke Harangody, Bloomington South's Cole Holmstrom, Forest Park's Brandon Hopf, Huntington North's Chris Kramer, Homestead's Grant Leiendecker, Anderson's DeJovaun Sawyer-Davis and Gary West's Jamil Tucker.

Greg Oden, at 7 feet, is the team's tallest member. The only players shorter than 6-foot-3 are the 5-10 Holmstrom and 6-1 Conley.

"We've got good versatility," said Benedict. "Some of the guys are strong in specific areas, and several are capable of multiple things."

"Our first intention will be to get (the ball) to Greg and the other guys in the paint," he added. "But we know Kentucky will try to limit that, so we've got to have guys who can knock down outside shots. We also want to play solid defense, run, handle the ball smoothly and score in transition."

Five players are headed to major college programs -- Greg Oden and Conley to Ohio State, Harangody to Notre Dame, Kramer to Purdue and Tucker to Virginia.
