Greg Oden's Middle School Coach Dies in Car Accident

INDIANAPOLIS - A middle school basketball coach who tutored Greg Oden before the Lawrence North star became national high school player of the year died in a car accident.

Craig Middle School coach Elmer Kurbursky, 55, died early Saturday on Indianapolis ' northeast side. Kurbursky coached Oden - who has committed to play college ball for Ohio State - in eighth grade.

Kurbursky's vehicle collided with another car and struck a utility pole, throwing him from the vehicle. His car then rolled on top of him, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The 17-year-old driver of the other car was not cited or charged, deputies said.

Oden, a senior at Lawrence North, recalled his fondness for the coach.

"He was very serious when we were practicing, but he was a cool guy," Oden said Saturday. "When I talked to him, I always had a smile on my face. I miss him. It's kind of like it's not real."

Kurbursky is survived by a wife and a daughter.

Visitation was Tuesday at the school with a funeral Wednesday at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center in Lawrence.
